Papers include elevations, floor plans, decorative motifs, and other architectural drawings, 1843-1890; sketches and sketchbooks of plants, trees, landscapes, animals, figure studies, and other subjects, some with descriptive notes and memoranda; five photographs of the stations he designed for the Gilbert Elevated Railway in New York City, 1878; personal letters received from John Falconer, 1846-1863, concerning the work and personal lives of other artists, descriptions of places and scenes, and other matters, some with sketches; and Cropsey's letters to his wife Maria Cooley Cropsey, written while on sketching trips or otherwise away from home, 1846-1880, concerning his affection for her, news of friends, descriptions of places and scenes, financial difficulties, and other domestic details.
